Independent toy stores are more than just places to shop — they are centers of creativity, imagination and learning. These shops are celebrated during the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association’s (ASTRA’s) Neighborhood Toy Store Month, which kicks off Friday, Nov. 1.
This annual nationwide celebration highlights the unique charm, personalized service and community spirit that local toy stores bring to their neighborhoods. As the holiday season approaches, customers of all ages are invited to visit their beloved toy shop. Each day in November, visitors will discover the magic of shopping local and supporting small businesses that make their communities special.
ASTRA says many independent toy stores will feature a series of special events, promotions and activities designed to create memorable experiences for families. Many stores have an ASTRA-certified play expert (CPE) who has learned about which types of play activities and kinds of toys develop certain skills for children to help them meet their needs.
These stores will also highlight play through MESH (mental, emotional, social health) with toys that help children and teens problem-solve, express feelings and build resiliency.
ASTRA President Sue Warfield says there are many advantages to shopping at independent toy stores.
“The benefits of going to a local, independently owned store for holiday gifts include staff that know their products, ‘extras’ such as free gift wrapping and a fun environment with hands-on demos and activities,” she says. “This year, the celebratory month will kick off what will kick off what will be a year-round program. Instead of only the month of November, our organization will be rolling out an ongoing program to showcase features and benefits of ASTRA stores and shopping local continually.”
Founded in 1992, ASTRA is an international nonprofit trade organization that serves more than 1,800 independent retailers, manufacturers and sales representatives of the specialty toy industry.
