Community connection is at the core of The Lakehaus Gifts + Goods in Moose Lake, Minnesota, where owner Jennifer Waldo has created a welcoming retail hub.
“We love what we do!” Waldo says of her “more than a store” stop in a destination that swells with visitors during the bustling summer season before settling back into a sleepy town of a couple thousand.
Waldo moved home to Moose Lake with her family in 2017. She initially helped her father run the 25-year-old Lakeside Traders store before becoming owner in 2025, when she rebranded it to Lakehaus.

“Rather than strictly touristy, we began focusing on making it a place for everyone,” says Waldo. “We are some people’s second families.”
Ultimately, Waldo sees the store as a vehicle for lifting up visitors and the Moose Lake economy. As an active member of the chamber of commerce, she also promotes a spirit of collaboration. “I’m invested in being present in the community,” she says.
Close to home
Every year, Waldo fields hundreds of requests for donated gift cards, baskets and sponsorships.
To filter resources where they’ll make the most impact, she prioritizes organizations that are within 10 miles of the shop.
During the Agate Days Festival in July, Waldo organizes themed T-shirts that benefit the chamber and support local purveyors.
Small Business Saturday is one of Lakehaus’ biggest events. The first 100 visitors receive a free gift such as Lakehaus merch. Waldo invites customers who make a purchase to spin a wheel for small prizes.
“I look at it as a way to give back to the community that supports us all year,” she says.
Stay awhile
Waldo is on a mission to offer a “happy place” for locals, visitors and her tight-knit staff.
The doors are always open, and Waldo encourages gatherings by hosting book clubs, holiday specials like a cookie walk and Meet Santa family day.
